Minecraft Fishing Calculator

Editions: Java (Bedrock not modeled — see FAQ) · Verified: Java 26.3 · 2026-10-14

Set the rod's Luck of the Sea and Lure, the water and the weather to see what share of catches are fish, junk and treasure, the odds of any single item, and how long a bite takes on average. The weights and the bite timer come from the fishing tables and code inside Java 26.3, checked against a second calculator. The two settings that matter most are not on the rod: water that fails the open-water check never gives treasure, and a roof over the bobber nearly doubles every wait.

Average wait for a bite

Seconds from the bobber settling in the water to the bite, on average, counting the redraws, the countdown and the fish swimming in. Reeling in and casting again come on top.

The worked example

A rod with Luck of the Sea III, cast into open water. The fishing table picks one of three sub-tables by weight, and each level of luck moves 2 points of weight from junk to treasure and takes 1 from fish: 82 fish, 11 treasure and 4 junk, out of 97. So 11.34% of catches are treasure, against 5% with no luck at all. The six treasure items are equally likely, so an enchanted book is 11.34% ÷ 6 = 1.89% of catches, about one in 52.9, and the chance of at least one in 100 catches is 85.16%.

Add Lure III and the average bite comes after 10.1 seconds instead of 20.1, so that book arrives about every 8.9 minutes of waiting. A bare rod gets one book in 120 catches at 20.1 seconds each: about 40.1 minutes. Put the same Lure III rod under a roof, though, and half the ticks stop counting: 20.1 seconds a bite, about where the bare rod started.

Left out because only the game's files cover it: the player's Luck attribute, which the code adds to Luck of the Sea (mctoolbox.net's calculator leaves it out, and so does this one), and the 1 to 6 experience points each catch drops. Not modeled because it is up to you: how quickly you reel in and recast, which is why the bites-an-hour figure is a ceiling. Bedrock Edition is not modeled. The paired guide gives the details.

The weights come from the fishing loot tables and the Luck of the Sea and Lure enchantment files in the Java 26.3 server download from Mojang, and the luck formula and bite timer from the game code in the same download, read 2026-10-14. All of it was checked against the fishing calculator on mctoolbox.net, read the same day, whose own script uses the same weights and timer and gives the same figures. The fishing guide works through every step.

Questions builders actually ask

How much does Luck of the Sea III increase treasure?

From 5% of catches to 11.34%, in open water. Each level adds 2 to treasure's weight of 5, takes 2 from junk's 10 and takes 1 from fish's 85, so at level III the draw is 11 treasure against 4 junk and 82 fish, out of 97. Junk falls from 10% to 4.12%, while fish barely move, from 85% to 84.54%.

What counts as open water?

The game checks the 5 by 5 area around the bobber in four layers, from one block below it to two blocks above it. Each layer must be all source water with nothing solid in it, or all air and lily pads, and water may not sit above an air layer, so the bottom layer has to be water. Flowing water or a solid block anywhere in that area fails the check, and then no treasure can be caught at all.

How much faster is Lure III?

About twice as fast under an open sky: the average wait for a bite falls from 20.1 seconds to 10.1. Each level takes 5 seconds off a countdown of 5 to 30 seconds, but a countdown that comes out at zero or less is drawn again, and the fish still takes 1 to 4 seconds to swim in, so Lure III never makes a bite instant.

Do rain and a roof change how fast fish bite?

Yes. Rain falling on the bobber makes a quarter of the ticks count twice, which cuts the average wait with Lure III from 10.1 to 8.1 seconds. A block above the bobber that hides the sky makes half the ticks not count at all, which nearly doubles the wait: Lure III under a roof averages 20.1 seconds, about the same as no Lure in the open.

Does Luck of the Sea change which treasure you get?

No. It only changes the choice between fish, junk and treasure. Inside treasure, the name tag, saddle, bow, fishing rod, enchanted book and nautilus shell are equally likely, one in six each, so an enchanted book is 1.89% of catches at Luck of the Sea III in open water, about one in 53.

Does this match Bedrock Edition?

Not exactly, so the calculator models Java only. Mojang's Bedrock sample files weigh the enchanted book above the other treasure and use a different junk list, as mctoolbox.net also notes, and there is no Bedrock code to check the bite timer against.
