Overworld to Nether, Nether to Overworld, and point-to-point distance with a compass heading. The conversion is the same arithmetic the game itself runs — divide X and Z by 8 and floor, never touching Y — so what this prints is where things actually are.
The worked example
A base at Overworld 700, 70, −350 pairs with Nether 87, 70, −44: 700 ÷ 8 is 87.5, floored to 87, and −350 ÷ 8 is −43.75, floored to −44 — the floor always moves toward negative infinity, which is the step most hand calculations get wrong. Going the other way, that Nether column at 87, −44 covers the whole 8×8 Overworld area from X 696 to 703 and Z −352 to −345, and the base sits inside it. Switch to distance mode and the two prefilled points — that base first, world spawn at 0, 63, 0 second — give the walk home: 782.6 blocks horizontally (782.7 with the seven-block drop included), heading 243.4° from north — southwest — or 97.8 blocks at the Nether's 1:8 scale, which is that same 782.6 divided by 8. Reverse the two points and the bearing reverses with them, to 63.4°, northeast. Walking between the two floored Nether columns, 0, 0 and 87, −44, is 97.5: the ratio is the planning number, and the floor rounding is the difference between the two. Every one of those numbers is asserted in this tool's test suite before deploy.
The rules in one table
| Direction | X and Z | Y |
|---|---|---|
| Overworld → Nether | divide by 8, round down | unchanged |
| Nether → Overworld | multiply by 8 (anchors an 8×8 area) | unchanged |
| Compass | +X east, −X west, +Z south, −Z north | up |
Conversion and axis facts verified against the Minecraft Wiki and cross-checked against two independent portal calculators, all three named in the coordinate guide.
Questions builders actually ask
How do I convert Overworld coordinates to Nether coordinates?
Divide X and Z by 8 and round down; Y stays the same. Rounding down matters on negative coordinates: Overworld Z -350 divided by 8 is -43.75, which floors to -44, not -43. The calculator applies the floor for you, the same rule the game uses to pair portals.
Why does one Nether block equal eight Overworld blocks?
Horizontal distances in the Nether map to the Overworld at a 1:8 ratio, so walking 1,000 Overworld blocks takes only 125 blocks of Nether travel. The scaling applies to X and Z only — height is never multiplied or divided.
Which direction is north in Minecraft?
North is negative Z, south is positive Z, east is positive X, and west is negative X. The heading this tool prints is measured clockwise from north, so 90 degrees means due east and 180 means due south.
Is the conversion different in Bedrock?
No. The divide-by-8 rule, the floor on negatives, and the unscaled Y are identical in Java and Bedrock. What differs between editions is how far the game searches for an existing portal when you travel, which is the Nether portal calculator's department.
