Maps do not center on you — they snap to a fixed grid offset 64 blocks from the origin. Type a coordinate and a zoom level to see exactly which cell you are in, its bounds and center, and how many maps a wall of your whole base needs.

The worked example

Stand at the origin and make a zoom-3 map: its cell runs from -64 to 959 on both axes — 1,024 blocks per side, centered at 448, 448, nowhere near you. That is the grid rule: top-left corners sit at -64 plus whole map widths, so where you stand picks the cell but never moves it. For a wall covering the origin out to X=2,000, Z=1,000 at zoom 3, the region touches columns 0 through 2 and rows 0 through 1 of the grid: 3×2 = 6 maps, hung 3 wide and 2 tall. Zooming each of those from a fresh map costs 3 paper at a cartography table (one per step) or 24 in the crafting grid.

The five zoom levels

ZoomBlocks per sideScaleBlocks per pixelPaper (table / craft)
01281:11×10 / 0
12561:22×21 / 8
25121:44×42 / 16
31,0241:88×83 / 24
42,0481:1616×164 / 32

A map is always 128×128 pixels; sources in the map grid guide.

Changed in the 26.3 drop, checked 2026-09-16: explorer maps and buried treasure maps can no longer be zoomed out, in a crafting table or a cartography table. The Java 26.3 changelog limits zooming to maps carrying the #minecraft:extendable_maps tag, and the Bedrock 26.50 changelog states the same for explorer maps. The zoom levels and paper costs on this page are for ordinary maps, which the drop did not change.

Questions builders actually ask

Why is my map not centered on where I made it?

Maps snap to a fixed world grid: every map's top-left corner sits at -64, -64 plus a whole number of map widths. Where you stand only decides which grid cell you get. The zoom-0 map around the origin always covers X and Z from -64 to 63, whoever makes it.

How much does each map zoom level cover?

A map is always 128 by 128 pixels. Zoom 0 covers 128 blocks per side at 1:1, and each zoom level doubles the side: 256, 512, 1,024, and 2,048 blocks at zoom 4, where one pixel covers a 16 by 16 patch.

What does it cost to zoom a map out?

One paper per zoom step at a cartography table, or 8 paper per step in the crafting grid. Taking a fresh map to zoom 4 therefore costs 4 paper at the table versus 32 by crafting — the table is eight times cheaper.

How many maps do I need for a wall of my base?

Count the grid cells your region touches, not just its size divided by map width — alignment matters. A region from the origin out to X=2,000, Z=1,000 touches 3 columns and 2 rows of zoom-3 cells, so the wall is 6 maps in 6 item frames.
