Type where a portal stands and get the exact coordinates to build its partner — plus the search box the game will actually scan when you step through, in your edition's real numbers. Portals do not link by magic or by pairs; every trip is a fresh hunt for the nearest lit portal near a computed target, and this tool shows you the hunt.

The worked example

An Overworld portal at 1000, 64, −1000 wants its partner at Nether 125, 64, −125 — both coordinates divide evenly by 8, so no flooring surprises. Step through from the Overworld on Java and the game scans a 16-block radius around that target: X 109 to 141, Z −141 to −109, any height. On Bedrock the same trip scans 128 blocks: X −3 to 253, Z −253 to 3 — 257 blocks on a side against Java's 33, about sixty times the area, which is why portal networks that behave on Java can cross-link the day they are rebuilt on Bedrock. Coming back, both editions scan 128 blocks around the Overworld anchor: X 872 to 1,128, Z −1,128 to −872. And because eight Overworld blocks floor to one Nether column, anywhere from X 1,000–1,007 and Z −1,000–−993 pairs with that same Nether portal. Every number in this paragraph is asserted in the test suite.

Questions builders actually ask

Where exactly should I build the paired Nether portal?

At your Overworld X and Z each divided by 8 and rounded down, at a Y as close to the Overworld portal's as the terrain allows. The link compares full 3D distance including height, so matching Y is not cosmetic — a portal on the right column but 60 blocks below the target can lose to a closer rival.

How far away can a portal be and still link?

On Java, entering the Nether searches a 16-block radius around the computed target and entering the Overworld searches 128 blocks; those two ranges cover the same ground across the 1:8 scale. On Bedrock the search is 128 blocks in both dimensions. The search spans the full world height in every case.

Why did my portal link to the wrong one?

Because another lit portal sits inside the search box and is closer in 3D distance to the computed target than yours. Height counts, and editions differ: a stray portal 20 blocks off the target is outside Java's 16-block Nether search but well inside Bedrock's 128, so the same layout can behave correctly on one edition and misfire on the other.

What happens if there is no portal on the other side?

The game builds one for you as close to the computed target as it can find a valid spot, and if nothing valid exists nearby it forces a small 2x3 obsidian platform and puts the portal there. Building your own portal at the computed coordinates first is how you keep that decision out of the game's hands.
